What is a POI?

It's a Point of Interest. It could be any useful or interesting place you can find on your GPS device, such as gas stations, hotels, motels, restaurants, cafés, service stations, tourist attractions, etc. Such data can be collected and provided by private individuals as well as content providers.

A GPS point of interest specifies, at minimum, the latitude and longitude of the POI. A name or description for the POI is usually included, and other information may also be attached. GPS applications typically use icons to represent different categories of POIs on a map graphically.

ExtraPOI provides a new generation of POIs for navigation systems. Up-to-date information listings and essential databases are the
two important tools which extraPOI provides for the new generation of navigation systems.

According to the large number of feedback we have received from users of the old POI, many of the listings in their GPS system have become outdated, as these listings are unable to keep up with our ever changing world. Old POI listings do contain basic information that made GPS popular in our fast-pace business environment. However, these old listings very often don't contain the correct business hours, phone numbers, the description of the business and its services. Moreover, they do not display photos and business logos that are useful and complementary of all point of interest listings. Without this crucial information, users of navigation systems have great difficulties choosing the right target destination.

How and based on what factors should GPS users make a decision, if the old POIs do not include any information about the opening hours of a bank, gas station or service? Based on what information will a driver, who has no knowledge of the area, choose a hotel or a restaurant, if there are no descriptions or images attached which make their decisions easier?

Information is Crucial

The new generation of extraPOI offers a solution for the above mentioned issues. In addition to accurate listings of addresses and business services, the extraPOI offers the following information to GPS users:

-   phone, fax number

-   web address

-   opening hours

-  short description of your business

- picture or logo of businesses

Without knowing all this information, it is difficult to decide if the given business is the one we are ooking for. Which gas station would you choose: the one you know exist, or the one you know for sure is open, has a car wash, and a shop? If we are looking for a particular service, we will for sure choose the point of interest listing that provides more information.
